Mostly Twigs : Welcome to Mostly Twigs!
Almost all of these pictures were taken in the wild or semi wild, parks and such. Birds that were going about their business and occasionally being curious about what the hell I was doing on their patch.
Because these shots are taken in the wild and my shooting style is one of hiking, stalking etc. it's sometimes difficult (but fun) to get set up for that perfect shot. Of course serendipity comes into play and is one of the big attractions of this kind of shooting.
I will sort things into sub galleries as soon as I figure out how to do that. In the mean time I will continue to add photos and text.

Ruby Throated Hummingbirds : Activity is finally picking up at the Hummingbird feeders. This is my first season trying to photograph them.
I think learning to get a decent shot of this bird is going to take some time.
I've seen more coming to the feeders this year so hopefully I'll have time to keep at it before they
move on for the winter.

By the end of September there were maybe two stragglers still fattening up at the feeders and persistent Salvia plants. The first week in October I had to travel. When I got home the last of the Hummingbirds were long gone.
I'll have to wait until next year to practice capturing these really entertaining little jewels.

Chiricahuan Birds II: Mountain Highlands : The Chiricahua Mountains in extreme southeast Arizona have been called THE premier bird area in all of North America. Home to Coatimundi (a relative of the raccoon) and species of wildlife that are found only in this mountain range, the Chiricahuas are a perfect example of a "Sky Island". The name rings down through the lore of the Old West, too; this is the ancestral home of the Chiricahua Apaches, whose names include such legends as Cochise and Geronimo. With its spectacular landscapes, abundant birds, and location off-the-beaten-track, it's the kind of place where I can repeatedly return to and never tire of its wonders. These are photos from my 8-day stay there in late June 2008. Speaking staying, a place I can highly recommend for lodging while visiting the Chiricahuas is Portal Peak Lodge; their website is here --- http://www.portalpeaklodge.com . The bird photos were taken with the Canon 40D DSLR and an EF 100-400 f4.5/5.6L IS lens, while the landscapes were captured with the Pentax K10D and a Pentax DA 16-45mm lens with a circular polarizer.

A book packed with information on southeast Arizona birds and detailed descriptions of the places they can be found is Rick Taylor's "A Birder's Guide to Southeastern Arizona," published by the American Birding Association ( http://www.abasales.com/index.php?main_page=pubs_product_book_info&products_id=493 ) It was my guide in the Chiricahuas, and a book I'd recommend for anyone visiting the area.

Presqu'ile Provincial Park : Had a wonderful day birding on September 11, 2008. This is a beautiful park on my "must visit" list for some time. I finally had the chance, and added 6 life birds to my list as a result.
